How to Get Started With Yoga (Without Feeling Overwhelmed)

Starting something new can feel intimidating, but yoga is all about progress, not perfection. Here’s how to ease into your yoga practice:

Start With Beginner Classes.

Look for classes labeled “Beginner” or “Gentle Flow.” These classes focus on basic poses and simple breathing techniques. There are 11 different styles of Yoga, from that the ones for you can also be Hatha Yoga, restorative, Yin, and slow flow styles.

Bring the Right Gear.

  • Yoga mat: Invest in a non-slip mat for stability.

  • Comfortable clothes: Wear stretchy, breathable clothing that lets you move freely.

  • Water bottle: Staying hydrated is key, especially if you’re trying a heated class.

Listen to Your Body.

Don’t push yourself into a pose that feels uncomfortable. Yoga is about honoring where your body is today. Yoga is not about pushing to the max, it is about length, balance and breath.

Practice at Home.

If you’re not ready to join a class, try online beginner yoga videos. Many free options are tailored for people over 40, focusing on alignment and safety. I work with people in their own space to get them ready to take classes or get better in their postures for classes they are already in. A private yoga session is much more affordable than you think starting at $45/hour and it is completely tailored to your abilities and needs.
