Yoga : Changes outside, sure… but in?
For years I have challenged myself to the max physically and for years that used to be enough. When I started getting older and noticing how those hard workouts felt more like pain and less like growth, I knew it was time to change. I was NOT born with a graceful body -my nickname in college for soccer was “Lumberjack” because I was just a barrel of ungraceful movement.
Fast forward almost 20 years and I have kids and a career, a house, husband and responsibilities. I was putting in similar effort in my workout like I did when I was in college and expecting it not to hurt. Not the case. I had always wanted to try Yoga, but physically I was just not the “standard”. I started with at home yoga videos and just kept practicing… in private. I still didn’t know names of poses and my transitions were trash even after a few months, but I was getting a lot stronger, that I could definitely notice.
As my kids grew older it felt so natural to tell them to practice breathing when they are angry and stressed, but I didn't even practice it myself! Yoga finally allowed me to slow down and think about how I needed to change inward to make positive impacts outward. Controlling movement and breath in yoga started reminding me to breathe in other moments, too.
